Disaster Response Unit

Sponsors needed for Disaster Response Unit on wheels

Vehicles and large-scale equipment

HRDSN provides assistance to poor villages in remote areas both during and after the event of flooding, earthquakes and landslides. The bulk of vehicles used by our disaster unit are rented as required.

Hire-vehicles are not always available and they put an unnecessary strain on funds that could be put to better use elsewhere such as the purchase of emergency medicine, shelters and food supply for disaster victim's children.
With equipment purchase donations, we hope to try to establish a HOSPITAL ON WHEELS equipped with in Nepal available Indian and Chinese built 4-wheel drive truck and jeeps.

Options for corporate & private sponsorship

One time or regular/irregular booster donations. We welcome any amount, either small or generous whooping, for purchase of heavy vehicles and facility construction.
For the Hospital on Wheels, the Disaster Response Unit and for training we need at least eight four wheel TATA trucks & four 4wheel drive jeeps made in India, which will be purchased on the Nepalese market. This requires all together a sum of approx. EURO 250,000.
An additional amount of approx. EURO 45,000 for building construction of quarters with attached canteen, bathrooms, appliances etc. and an additional EURO 120,000 are required for the construction of our on side boarding school.

Disaster Aid Workers have to be from various specialized professions that are useful to run the squad effectively during natural or man made calamities in Nepal.

Right now we have started with the training of more Nepalese outdoor paramedics, nurses, pharmacists, heavy vehicle drivers, mechanics, administrators, supply assistants, cooks and social workers for disaster victim care.
Furthermore we soon will recruit qualified Nepalese English boarding school-teachers for our new to establish on the side Boarding School for Disaster Orphans (HRDSN BSDO).

Qualified Nepalese candidates for the training program are available in our own pool of juniors! They are waiting eagerly to get trained for a job with HRDSN. We know these young people since their very childhood, they all have spend 10 years and more at HRDSN own Riverside- Boarding School and Augsburg Haus Academy for Children of Rescue Workers at our base in Shyauli Bazaar/Lamjung District.

Our recent available funds are dwindling very fast now and so we urgently seek more corporate and private donors internationally.
The very first donor's contributions are used to support and finance the training program for these Nepalese Juniors. This training will last for two full years and starts right after the Nepalese Festival Season in Mid- November.

After completing their training the new Nepalese Disaster Relief Workers will perform their duties alongside with the Senior Rescue Workers in commercial wings of HRDSN for financial self-sustainability. These commercial activities are already in place for many years. One of them is search and rescue of missing foreign trekkers, which will be paid and rewarded by the missing persons insurance cover and by their relatives. Related services are: commercial tourist treatment & health check up in HRDSN's health posts and Riverside Hospital. HRDSN trekking lodge with restaurant at the Annapurna Round is an other source of income for HRDSN to pay everybody's wages.

The HRDSN disaster unit will be stationed in Bijayapur/Pokhara Valley and build at HRDSN legally owned land near the Highway to Kathmandu. Once the Disaster Unit is operational, the German Foreign Office and other diplomatic missions in Nepal have already pledged again, that they will finance the HRDSN operation and medical supply costs during floods, landslides, earthquake and other calamities. Already as early as 1993 and up to 1996, until the start of The Peoples War, HRDSN medical aid camps in southern and eastern Nepal had been organized successfully together with Nepal's Government Ministry of Health, Ministry of Home and altogether financed with foreign embassy assistance.

Next plan:
The construction of HRDSN Overland Motel & Camper Park at the main road entry of Pokhara Valley in Bijayapur has been approved by local authorities and is under design. This will be financed with some commercial joint venture investors. All these commercial jobs are effective and an income guarantee for all HRDSN unit staff and their families.

Our actions before the Maoist war:

This is the action preparedness we are now rebuilding from scratch! Our know-how amongst our staff and volunteers is our best asset for this!

HRDSN is the first and only disaster unit and mountain rescue organisation in South-East Asia to utilise the outdoor treatment skill of dogs in order to trace missing persons. Working to an altitude of 5600m in a range of unusually diverse and harsh conditions we have gained a reputation as being both swift and efficient. From jungle gorges to vast flooded plains, searching avalanche zones or attending the scene of large-scale road traffic accidents our duty is always clear: to trace missing people and provide skilled medical aid to those in need.

Destroyed village

Flash floods are an annual event here in Nepal. The monsoons bring heavy rain and heat, melting winter snow and ice in the high Himalayan mountain ranges and charging the rivers with power and ferocity.
Furthermore, the high degree of seismic activity observed over most of Nepal ensures that landslides, earth tremours and even occasional full-scale quakes are never too far away.

Malnutrion victims

For 20 years now, due to poor national infrastructure and a lack of proper government support in the field, we have provided the only medical disaster relief to poor villages in remote areas. In that time we have treated over 25,000 people, saving at least 6,000 suffering from potentially fatal disease (typhoid, cholera, pneumonia, food poisoning, amoebic dysentery, etc.), many of whom were infants.

Our Nepalese Rescue Squad is experienced in a wide range of disciplines - rock Climbers, heavy vehicle drivers, paramedics, fire-fighters, logistics and outdoor medics (CMA).

From deep in the mountains and gorges, sometimes close to many of the popular trekking routes, HRDSN has to-date recovered over 300 foreign and Nepalese nationals alive. A sad fact is that most of the accidents and losses we have witnessed could and should have been avoided by exercising a few basic precautions.

Being a mere 6 minutes from Pokhara Airport and 25 minutes from Kathmandu Airport by helicopter, fast air-lift to difficult locations is very much possible.
